Do You Have To Walk a Maine Coon?

If youג€™re thinking about adding a new furry friend to your family, youג€™ve probably given a lot of thought as to which breed is best for you and your family. Many people choose to add an adorable ferret or another member of the feline family, but not many people think about adding a cat. There are so many cute kittens available right now that it seems like a no-brainer. If only it were that simple!
The chances are good that if you have chosen to adopt an adult cat, they have done so because they feel like it and not because they have been walked on a leash every day since kittenhood. They may be friendly and sweet with other household pets, but some adults cats will choose isolation over company if offered the chance instead of being forced out into the world. The same goes for any cat who has always been indoors and never seen anything beyond their cozy little home; even well-socialized indoor cats can find life outside overwhelming at first.

How Often Should You Walk a Maine Coon?

It is important to remember that cats, like humans, are individuals. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often your cat should be walked. For some portly cats, 2-3 times a day is plenty. For others, they might need to walk 4-5 times a day or even more. Some cats just enjoy being whisked around the house in their carriers and this method of exercise will suffice for them.
But what about the cats who want to be outside as much as possible? These cats may benefit from 1-2 walks each day with an occasional outing during the week when you can leave them at home for two hours or so and go out for lunch. This will help your cat feel more outdoorsy and allow him or her to explore their new surroundings without any fear of retribution from their human family members

Do Maine Coons Need To Go Outside?

If you have an adult cat who has never gone outside, they may feel out of place, unsure of your intentions and scared when they first start to explore. If this is the case, you might consider getting a kitten or bringing a feral or abandoned cat into your home to help acclimate the adult cat. This way, the two can get used to each other gradually and peacefully.
When adopting a Maine Coon from a shelter or rescue group, itג€™s important to bring them outdoors for some time in order to help them adjust. A short period at first and then more time as they show signs of readiness. If you are thinking about adding one from a breeder, it’s up to you whether or not you want your new family member given enrichment opportunities such as interacting with other cats and animals. It’s always possible that an outdoor lifestyle could be part of their regular routine once they’re fully adjusted.

Can a Maine Coon Walk Alone?

The best way to make sure your new cat is ready for life outside the house is to allow them to roam freely around the house for a few weeks before you take them outside. This gives them plenty of time to get used to their surroundings and adjust to their new home. You can also try playing some cat games with your Maine Coon or give it plenty of time on its own in a room where it will be comfortable.
