How Can I Tell if My Kitten Is a Maine Coon?

Table of Contents

The Maine Coon or the Siamese mix is a popular cat breed for many reasons. These cats have striking blue eyes, are very affectionate and generally friendly to everyone. They are known as ג€_x009c_gentle giantsג€_x009d_ because of their size and friendly nature. Their size makes these cats easy to care for and they require minimal grooming so you donג€™t spend a lot of time on maintenance.
However, this also makes it harder to tell if your kitten is a Maine Coon or not. This is because there are more than 40 different cat breeds that are considered Maine Coons by some, although other people do not consider any of them as one particular thing.
The majority of the main types of Maine Coons come from the Siamese cat breed. However, other common types include Seal, Blue Point and Norwegian Forest Cat among others. Hereג€™s how you can tell if your kitten is actually a Maine Coon:

How Does a Maine Coon Kitten Act?

Maine Coons are known for their friendly personalities and gentle demeanor. They will be happy to meet new people and friends at the door, but they are not as affectionate as other cats. Maine Coons grow up to be large animals with short coats that only require minimal grooming. As a result, it is harder to tell if your kitten is a Maine Coon because there are many different types of cats that have similar characteristics.
As an example, you can ask the breeder or see pictures of your potential kitten before you buy it if its eyes look like blue eyes so you can see whether or not they have different patterns with their fur markings on them. Another way would be to watch your newborn cat for a couple of days after it comes home from the breeder to ensure that it does not have spots on its skin like other Maine Coons do. You can also try playing with your new kitten and see how big and soft it is compared to other kittens you know of or look at pictures of typical Maine Coons when you get home so you can compare the size and shape in case they donג€™t feel right.

What Does a Three Week Old Maine Coon Kitten Look Like?

At three weeks old, a Maine Coon kitten is just starting to get more comfortable on their feet. They are still small and have a lot of baby fat. They will have round, large eyes that are blue in color. Their ears are wide and rounded, not too pointed like other types of cats. They also tend to have a white spot on the top of their heads which can be seen when they are an adult cat. The tail will be short with a tuft of fur at the end and their legs will be long and slender with paws that look like theyג€™ll never get any bigger than this.
When your kitten is around six weeks old, youג€™ll notice their eyes getting lighter in color as well as some changes in their fur. Their ears may start out rounded but start to point toward the back by the time they become adults. Their tail will start growing more quickly and should reach around twelve inches when fully grown while their paws will stay essentially the same size as they were at three weeks old.
Additionally, you should keep an eye out for another sign that your kitten may be a Maine Coon: their teeth. A Maine Coon kitten has very soft teeth so you donג€™t need to worry about your cat biting you or your furniture and it’s easy for them to clean themselves because of this characteristic.

Do Maine Coon Kittens Have Big Paws?

Maine Coon kittens have big paws. This is because the Maine Coon breed originates from European cats and has been selectively bred to gain their large size.
This is one of the easiest ways to tell if your kitten is a Maine Coon. If your catג€™s paws are larger than its body, it probably has some relative in the Maine Coon line.
Additionally, the Maine Coons get their blue eyes from crossing the Abyssinian and Siamese lines. However, this trait can be found in other breeds with blue eyes as well such as Bengal or Russian Blue cats.

Is Your Cat Long Haired or Maine Coon?

Maine Coons are generally long haired. They have a longer fur coat that grows down their backs and on the sides of their face. This is something that you can easily tell by looking at your cat, but you could also ask your vet.
Maine Coons also have a very distinct coloration, with blue eyes and a seal-like coat color. If your kitten has these features, then chances are good that heג€™s not just a Maine Coon mix.
If your cat has short hair and doesnג€™t look like the Maine Coon breeds above, then they are probably not one. You should still take them to the vet because they might still be healthy, but they arenג€™t likely to be purebred Maine Coons.
If none of this helps or if you have any questions about what breed your kitten might be, contact a breeder in your area for help!
